The Crew 2 : Toronto

Level Design for Toronto Street Races.

In this level design set in the city of Toronto, I created three distinct Street Races, focusing entirely on ground vehicles as per the requirements. By first establishing primary routes (RED) and then adding secondary routes (BLUE), I designed a network featuring 58 intersections across the city.

Since I don’t typically design racing games, I opted to limit the number of roads and intersections. I chose to focus on Street Races, which align with the urban environment and racing style I wanted to create. The final race routes are marked in GREEN, representing the mandatory paths players must follow.

Street Race Overview (based on "The Crew 2"): Street racing often takes place in a complex urban maze, requiring players to navigate sharp turns while avoiding traffic and obstacles. Success relies heavily on a player’s ability to orient themselves, with the goal always being to cross the finish line first. Shortcuts, an essential aspect of street racing, allow drivers to gain crucial seconds. These shortcuts vary, from narrow alleys and jumps to rooftops, testing different driving skills.

Race Layouts:

  • Race 01: The first race begins at entry point 01 and finishes at exit 04. This race focuses on speed and players’ instincts. Although it features straight roads, these are still packed with hazards, as the race cuts through busy areas of the city, with heavy traffic adding difficulty. The route starts in Etobicoke York, runs through Midtown, briefly returns to Etobicoke York, and finishes in Scarborough. Being the first race, it serves as an introduction to the controls and gameplay mechanics.

  • Race 02: Starting at entry point 02 and finishing at exit 03, this race is built around two major turns in the West End and East End districts. After an initial straight stretch, players must navigate these critical turns, which will largely determine the outcome. The route traverses key central neighborhoods such as North York, West End, and East End. Following the first turn, players will encounter heavy traffic before the second turn. The race ends near the iconic Aga Khan Museum, adding scenic value to the challenge. This race familiarizes players with more complex turning mechanics while maintaining a manageable progression in difficulty.

  • Race 03: The final race, starting at entry point 04 and ending at exit 01, is the most challenging and maze-like. This course pushes players to apply all the skills they’ve learned from the previous races: managing traffic, mastering sharp turns, and speeding down straightaways. It winds through the entire city, making the most of Toronto’s urban landscape.

Unlike the previous races, this one emphasizes secondary routes over main roads, requiring players to think strategically and utilize every shortcut and detour available. This final race is designed to test players’ expertise and provide a thrilling conclusion to the series.
