Persona 3 - Metroidvania

PROJECT OVERVIEW
In a project inspired by the Persona series, specifically Persona 3 reimagined as a Metroidvania, I designed a level based on Tartarus, blending elements from the Thebel and Yabbashah blocks. My aim was to create a space that retains the series' distinctive atmosphere while infusing it with new gameplay dynamics typical of the Metroidvania genre.

VISUAL AESTHETIC
To achieve this, I developed a test floor that replicates the visual aesthetic of Persona 3. I carefully selected textures and models from available asset packs, ensuring they resonated with the game’s art style. The environment features dimly lit corridors, intricate stonework, and surreal architecture that evoke a sense of mystery and unease, reminiscent of Tartarus’ labyrinthine design.

GAMEPLAY MECHANICS
Staying true to the Metroidvania style, I introduced mechanics that enhance exploration and player engagement. These include jumping mechanics that allow players to navigate vertical spaces effectively, bouncing off specific surfaces to reach higher platforms, and movable blocks that add a layer of puzzle-solving to the traversal experience. Additionally, I implemented environmental hazards that require players to utilize their skills creatively, such as timed traps or shifting platforms that challenge their reflexes.

DESIGN CONSTRAINTS
Due to time constraints (approximately 4 hours), recreating Tartarus with its extensive 200+ floors was not feasible. Instead, I concentrated on capturing the essence of this iconic dungeon while integrating new traversal mechanics tailored to a Metroidvania setting. This approach allowed me to focus on a smaller, more manageable area that still embodies the core themes of exploration and discovery found in both Persona 3 and Metroidvania games.

BACKTRACKING
In this level design, I also explored the concept of backtracking, encouraging players to revisit earlier sections with newfound abilities, unlocking hidden areas and secrets that enrich the narrative experience. This design choice not only enhances replayability but also deepens the connection players feel with the environment as they uncover its layered history.

CONCLUSION
Overall, this project serves as an homage to Persona 3, blending its memorable aesthetic with innovative gameplay mechanics, resulting in a unique and engaging level that resonates with fans of both the series and the Metroidvania genre.
